Being unaware for women can include another subject that doesn't apply to men

Awareness is a major Key to Self Defense

Sheep asleep at the switch

o      Looking Down

o      Focused on Reading

o     Both Hands Full

Lack of Awareness sets you up for trouble

·       We are not blaming the victim

·       Awareness increases your chances of avoiding attacks

·       Do not tune out, it makes you too vulnerable!

·       Do not be paranoid, but do stay alert.

Awareness = Time to Avoid Problems

Be a Wolf!

You should be a well behaved alert critter until the options are exhausted… then Attack!

Awareness

·        You have to be willing to accept that violent dangerous confrontations might happen to anyone.

·        Violence is unpredictable, but you can learn to be prepared and deal with it.

If your senses or intuition say there is a problem, listen!

Awareness includes external events and internal reactions.

If you are afraid, hair standing up on the back of your neck, listen to yourself!

When you aware you can see some one who is ready to invade your space

(less than 5' away) or who looks aggressive/hostile).

Distance is your friend!

At  least a step away

Keep a S.A.F.E. Distance

When the individual’s intentions are not clear!

S.A.F.E.  Distance for Women = Far Enough so he has to lean or take a step to touch you

Stay out of his reach

S.A.F.E.  Distance for Men = Handshake Distance or slightly further

·       Weapons involved = More Distance

·        Multiple Aggressors = More Distance

Be Aware, Relaxed, Ready

Fences = Hands Up, Ready

Relaxed Picture (External)

Ready to Go (Internal)

Unassuming= Open Palms

Knees partially bent

Distance is your friend!  Especially when you can see trouble is brewing!

Given some distance the defender can adjust and respond.
